OF THE DISSERTATION Multiple Antenna Wireless Systems and Channel State Information by Dragan Samardzija Dissertation Director: Professor Narayan B. Mandayam The use of multiple antennas in wireless systems have been shown to provide tremendous capacity gains. A key factor in realizing such gains is the knowledge of the channel state information (CSI) at the receiver and transceiver. In this thesis we study the fundamental limits of multiple antenna multiuser systems in the following contexts: (1) pilot-assisted channel state estimation, (2) transmitter optimization with delayed CSI and (3) CSI feedback schemes. We first analyze the effects of pilot assisted MIMO channel estimation on achievable data rates (lower bound on information capacity) over a frequency flat time-varying channel. Under a block-fading channel model, the effects of the estimation error are evaluated in the case of the estimates being available at the receiver only (open loop), and in the case when the estimates are fed back to the transmitter allowing water pouring transmitter optimization (closed loop). Using a characterization of the effective noise due to estimation error, we analyze the achievable rates as a function of the power allocated to the pilot, the channel coherence time, the background noise level as well as the number of transmit and receive antennas. We observe that as the number of transmit antennas increases, the sensitivity to the channel response estimation error is more pronounced (while keeping the same number of receive antennas). It is also seen that in certain cases, it is better to use the open loop scheme as opposed to the closed loop scheme. The analysis presented here can be used to optimally allocate pilot power for various system and channel operating conditions, and also to determine the effectiveness of closed loop feedback. Next, we consider multiple antenna transmitter optimization schemes that are based on

A Multiband Multiple-input Multiple-output Antenna System for Long Term Evolution and Wireless Local Area Networks Handsets

A novel multiband multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system is proposed. The MIMO antenna system consists of two antenna elements, each of which comprises of three radiators: a driven monopole, an S-shaped strip and an inverted F-shaped strip and occupies footprint of 15x18.5x0.8 mm3 only. The driven monopole acts as a quarter-wave monopole and stimulate higher mode resonance. The tw...

Reduced dimension space-time processing for multi-antenna wireless systems

The need for wireless communication systems has grown rapidly during the last few years. Moreover, there is a steady growth in the required data rates due to the fact that more and more users request high-bit-rate services. To meet those requirements, current and next-generation wireless systems and networks such as wireless LANs (e.g., IEEE 802.11a) will support much higher data rates compared...

Grassmannian Predictive Coding for Limited Feedback in Multiple Antenna Wireless Systems

Limited feedback is a paradigm for the feedback of channel state information in wireless systems. In multiple antenna wireless systems, limited feedback usually entails quantizing a source that lives on the Grassmann manifold. Most work on limited feedback beamforming considered single-shot quantization. In wireless systems, however, the channel is temporally correlated, which can be used to re...

Limiting Queueing Models for Scheduling in Multi-user MIMO Wireless Systems

Opportunistic scheduling based on full channel state information at the transmitter can provide significant performance gains for wireless networks by exploiting the independence of fading statistics across the user population. While opportunistic schedulers typically pick the single “best” user for transmission, MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) systems can support transmissions to multipl...
